Only applicable to the 32-bit version of the Sims 3
The graphics card issue is still grating away at me. I’m not affected by it and I don’t play Sims 3 anymore but it’s still irritating me because so many users are affected. I’ve always flirted with the idea of editing the .sgr files myself and uploading them but not having an affected Mac makes testing a little difficult. So, this is where you lovely Mac users come in! I need people willing to test the files for me, to download and put them in their game folders and see if we can get all of those pesky Intel chips finally recognised in the game.
This is a (hopeful) graphics fix only. If you are getting Found:1 Matched:1 and still encountering errors you need to read my Sims 3 help page for more help. If you have Late Night/Ambitions/Fast Lane/Outdoor Living installed you need to carry out additional fixes – getting the packs to show up in the Launcher and adding the relevant folders to the game files.

Description of problem and how it is solved:
Macs with AMD graphics cards are not affected as badly, this is the only type of card that throws up the unrecognised video card error in the game but will play anyway. Unsupported Intel chips just point blank refuse to load, as do some NVIDIA GPUs.
As a test I played around with adding lines to the GraphicsCards.sgr and GraphicsRules.sgr files for the AMD GPU in my current 2017 15″ Touch Bar MacBook Pro. It has an integrated Intel 630 chip and a discrete/dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 560, the game uses the AMD so we can safely ignore the Intel. After testing a couple of different lines the following text was recognised by the game and we finally had a recognised card!
For the GraphicsCards.sgr file:
card 0x67ef "AMD Radeon Pro 560"
For the GraphicsRules.sgr file:
match("${cardName}", "*Pro 560*")
Checking the DeviceConfig.log file confirms that the game has found and matched the card:
The graphics in my game really pop now. I added the card to the Uber settings as it has 4Gb VRAM so can happily handle super high settings.
Information needed:
If you’d like to help yourself and fellow Mac users, miserable at not being able to play their game properly, PLEASE let me know. Leave a comment on here, contact me on Facebook or on Twitter. I will need the following information from you though, in full:
- Exact model of your Mac. You can find this by clicking on the Apple in the menu bar then About This Mac. Please provide everything shown here: You may not think all that detail is important – it is!
- Device ID – Click on System Report > Graphics/Displays and look for the Device ID:
- If you have a 15″ MacBook Pro with an additional NVIDIA or AMD graphics card please provide the Device ID of that card together with the VRAM figure.
I’m confident that I already have the correct Device IDs for all unsupported Macs, giving me this information is just for verification. It also helps determine the graphics level your Mac is capable of.
Files ready for downloading and testing:
If your Mac has the listed graphics below please feel free to download and copy and paste the text from the files I have already uploaded. I have included a readme file in the download with full instructions on what to do, please read it! You must edit your GraphicsCards.sgr AND GraphicsRules.sgr files, not just one of them. These files have not been confirmed as 100% accurate yet, they are for testing, PLEASE comment below if they worked or not. Once I have confirmation that the files work and the game loads successfully, yielding both a Found and Matched positive result, I will post in a separate list.

Thanks a lot for your help! 🙂 Sadly, even though it says matched: 1 now, the game still doesn’t work. If I try to open it with the launcher the unknown error message still pops up and if I bypass the launcher and open it, the blue screen with the green sims logo appears, but then error 0x0175dcbbb occurs and I have to quit it. 😦 (I open it through origin btw, if that’s relevant at all)

Great that it shows Matched:1 but not great that you’re still getting the error 😦 Just to clarify, you have a completely clean game with no CC/Mods and you have just the base game or packs too? If you have packs installed which ones?
LikeLike
Soo, I just got this macbook last week and I installed the base game, late night and High End Loft stuff via origin. Nothing worked and I couldn’t deinstall it with the deinstaller, because when it asked me to choose which game to deinstall, none of them showed. So, I just deleted everything from my Mac that had to do with sims and now I only reinstalled the base game, which also doesn’t show in the deinstaller 😦
LikeLike
Ok. So Late Night, Ambitions, Fast Lane and Outdoor Living are all problematic but can work (we’ll get onto that in a minute…). For now, can you please manually uninstall any remnants of the game that are still on your Mac. You need to follow this guide to look in the Library folders. Next, download and install a fresh copy of just the base game then apply the 1.67 super patch. Now do the graphics cards stuff we’ve just done so you get the Found and Matched stuff showing correctly. Then try to launch your game again. FYI, once you’ve downloaded the game through Origin you do not need Origin at all to play, you can safely launch the game from within your Applications folder 🙂

Jamiesmile—Bluebellflora isn’t asking for your computer’s serial number. That’s something that you should in fact never post online. What she wants is the device ID on your graphics card, as described above. This is not a unique identifier, it’s just the ID by which every card of a specific model is known. More relavantly, it’s the ID by which TS3 can be told to identify and use that card. For example, Bluebellflora and I have identical graphics cards in our laptops, so our cards have the same device ID. That means she and I could use the same .sgr file text to force TS3 to recognize our cards. But the serial numbers of our computers are different.

In the article, and the read me instructions you downloaded, I explain what they are. If the values are 1 the fix has worked, if one or both values are 0 it hasn’t. If they are 0 I need to know as the text isn’t correct so we need to try something else.
LikeLike
Ok, thanks for clarifying. In that case, either one or both are 0, because I’m still not able to load the launcher and the Unknown Error Occurs
LikeLike
No, that’s not the case. They are not 0 or 1 as something else is causing your game not to load which is why they Sims 3 folder is not being generated. You need to understand that you are trying to get a game which is not supported on your Mac to play. It is not compatible because the hardware in your Mac is not supported and the operating system you are running is not supported. The workarounds that I, and other experienced Mac Simmers and helpers suggest, are just that, workarounds. This graphics fix is a graphics fix, it is not a magical fix for the game. It is one of three steps you have to take to try and get your game to load (the others being applying the manual patch and adding the problematic packs, if you have them, to the launcher and the game files).
It’s probably best if you completely get rid of everything Sims and Transgaming related off your Mac and start again. To save me having to list everything here, please read my article on the Unknown Error message with just the base game installed – https://bluebellflora.com/unknown-error-message-sims-3-base-game-only/

Also sadly, I did as the instructions say and I’m still getting the error code. This is just trying to get into the base game…

This fix is not about fixing the game in one go, it is about getting the game to recognise your graphics chip. As you can see at the end of the instructions you have downloaded, I ask about the Found and Matched values in the deviceconfig file – what are yours?

Yes, that is correct about the two lines. For the GraphicsRules file you replace the text from your GraphicsRules file with mine.

Hi BluebellFlora,
I followed your recommendations for the AMD Radeon Pro 560. I only have the base game on my Mac currently but the program is newly installed and has never been successfully launched. I just receive the “Unknown error occurred” message whenever I try to open it.
Here are the specs:
macOS High Sierra (version 10.13.6)

Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

1. Intel UHD Graphics 630 (0x389b); VRAM (1536 MB)
2. AMD Radeon Pro 560X (0x67ef); VRAM (4096 MB)
I looked for the DeviceConfig.log file in the directory folder but there wasn’t one, probably because the game has never completely launched.

What are the Found and Matched values in the deviceconfig file? You should be able to see them now. Make sure you’ve purged RAM before launching the game.

Hi there. Thank you so much for your hard work on this fix. I’m so happy to report that it works! First, here’s the relevant info:

When I upgraded my 2012 model computer earlier this year, I followed your instructions to edit the graphics files myself. Although it got the game to open, the entire map would appear grey in Edit Town, save for the map tags. The game would then freeze immediately upon selecting a household to play. I was certain to follow your instructions correctly, and I’ve successfully troubleshooted other Mac-related issues in the past, but it just wasn’t working. I am so excited that it is finally working and graphics loading as expected! I see that my graphics card hasn’t yet been officially confirmed as working, so if you need any other additional info from me, please let me know.
One other issue I encountered, which I’ll detail here for the benefit of anyone else having the same issue: after I applied your fix and started up the game, I noticed that changes to the graphics options were not sticking. I upped a couple options, saved and restarted the game, to find that they were all back on the default (which is “low” for everything). I searched around and saw that some PC users had the same issue after updating their graphics drivers. I was able to solve it by deleting the Options.ini file in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 and letting the game generate a new one upon starting. This works for me because I know all the settings I like, but if you want to use your original Options.ini file, this forum post has instructions that may work: https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/comment/16213394/#Comment_16213394
Again, thank you SO much for this fix! I’ve always played on a Mac, and your resources have been invaluable on many occasions over the years. I’m so excited to be able to play TS3 again.

Any idea on what to do? I have my graphics info in the .sgr files but that doesn’t do anything

What line did you add to the GraphicsCard.sgr file? I reckon it should be something like:
card 0x591e "Intel (R) HD 615"
And the GraphicsRules.sgr file should have:
elseif (match("${cardName}", "*IntelHD615*"))
seti cardLevel $cardLevelMedium
seti isCardMatched true
I wouldn’t set the graphics any higher than medium using that chip.

Your Mac has integrated and dedicated/discrete graphics. The game will use the dedicated AMD. You shouldn’t need to edit the files as it is the Intel chips that are the issue. What you should do is read the Unknown Error fixes, you can find the links under the Sims 3 drop down menu near the top of the page 🙂

end
and in the Graphics Rules I searched for Pro 570, then duplicated this line:

When I go now to DeviceConfig, I get 1 & 1. Prior to doing the edit I got 0 & 0, although the game still ran.

I have tried using the link for “Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655” that you have provided but I still get the same error message.
I am unsure if I am using the wrong link but I figured I would give that one a try since that is the graphics card I have.
Just to be thorough, I was confused on one of the steps. When it says NOT to save the new .sgr files we copy from you, I get confused because when you go to close the window, it is considered edited and only gives the options “revert changes”, “cancel” or “save” so I did click save as it seems to be the only option that makes sense. Hi Bluebell Flora. Thanks for all your help with troubleshooting thus far. I tried following your directions as far as GraphicsCards and GraphicsRules goes for Intel 6000. However, when I went to launch the game I still get the error message “Cannot start the process when the Game is running. Please quit the game and try again”. I only see “ContentPatch; DCBackup; DCCache; Downloads; Exports; InstalledWorlds; Recorded Videos; Screenshots; SigsCache; and Sims3LauncherLogFile.log and tslus.bin”. Is Sims3LauncherLogFile.log the same as DeviceCongif.log? thanx so much for replying! i edited the graphicsrules.sgr but got a pop up message that said “unknown graphics card” and something in the lines of “your settings are turned to high, you might want to change it if there are problems” and then when I get to the town screen to pick a lot, the whole town is grey and I can’t see anything. 😦

That pop up is good! It means that the game has at least recognised you have a graphics chip which it didn’t before 😀 Unfortunately the grey issue is a problem I can’t get to the bottom of but you should be able to load lots ok?

Hey! I’ve got a Mac that doesn’t appear to have been ‘fixed’ yet (unless I’m totally blind, which I don’t believe to be the case). I tried messing around to make it work on mine using the format and example of the documents you’ve already provided, but it appears that I’m not particularly talented in that field ;). I totally apprecaite all the help you’ve provided for this community and the countless people you’ve already rescued from that twice damned error message. Turns out that I am indeed blind! Thank you very much. I installed the documents for the graphics card, only issue is that my DeviceConfig.log file doesn’t show that “Found:1 Matched:1”. However, my game seems to be running fine even without it. No excessive lag (outside of the typical Sims 3 speed) and it saves and boots up the save just fine. Only issue is that the Pets seem to have an odd ‘shadow’ around them, almost like an opaque body double just a few centimeters off the original sim animal. The human sims do not have this issue. Am I alright continuing to play as is, or should I reattempt the install until I receive the correct message?

Hmm, you should be ok with an AMD GPU as it doesn’t cause the same issues as the Intel chips do. Did you make sure that every single file from the previous installation had been trashed? Just one residual file can mess with a subsequent installation.

Hi there! Just wanted to say thank you for this page, I was able to add my Laptop which is a Mid 2015 M370X chip, an and it now says:
Name (driver): AMD Radeon R9 M370X

But I do have a question – I am currently forced to play at 1200×800 for the game to be at least 20fps. If I go any higher I am getting single digit frame rates. This has me confused because I was literally getting 15fps on my MacBook 2010 with 320M Graphics. A mid 2015 MacBook Pro should surely be doing better than that, no?
Is the Sims 3 for Mac really that demanding? Do people on Mac get any better frame rates than that? I am just curious.

Hi,
Not sure if you’re still taking comments but I figured might as well still give it a shot since you’ve given amazing advice to other people somewhat recently. I’ve been trying to run some expansion packs on my Mac for some time now and have never been able to get them to work properly. I’m mostly trying to install Pets and Seasons. I have the disks for the TS3, LN, High-Loft Stuff, and Pets but have seen people struggle with launching with LN installed so I decided only to install Pets. No luck, even with the disk I couldn’t get this to launch properly 😦 it’s never been highlighted in my Launcher. I ended up loading my game through Origin some time back to see if I could get the digital copies to work better, and they’re always stuck on download/install/finalizing besides TS3, that I never have an issue with being able to play luckily. I’ve uninstalled Origin a few times and reinstalled everything and still had no luck. I thought if I bought a pack through Origin that maybe I’d finally have an EP I could play. I couldn’t buy Pets since I already have it “installed”, so I bought Seasons. I’m having the exact issue with this pack and I bought it through Origin! I don’t understand what could be wrong. Also, my Mac cannot support the 64-bit version from Origin because of the Metal aspect of the download 😦 Not sure if Seasons downloaded from there is also potentially a 64-bit download seeing as there’s 3 options to choose from.
When I look for the icons in the Add-Ons folder, both the Pets and Seasons icons have stop icon instead of the regular plumbobs. When I click the icons I get an error that pops up saying that it can’t open because it’s damaged or incomplete, so I’m hoping maybe that means maybe it’s because of later versions of Macs not supporting it. Any help would be so greatly appreciated, I just want to be able to play games I’ve bought. Also thought I should mention that I have everything downloaded on an external hard drive that I’ve had no issues playing the base game from. Thanks, again if you see this!
